An editor once told me that out of curiousity, he’d done some research on LEXIS/NEXIS, and found that there was only one reported incident of soldiers returning from Vietnam being spat upon, and the spitters were right wingers who were angry that the soldiers weren’t fighting hard enough. The idea that antiwar protesters would spit on returning soldiers never made any sense to me, for two reasons: first, bringing the soldiers home was a major goal of the antiwar movement; and second, returning veterans were the vanguard of the antiwar
