| While I usually love people extended versions of films (the special editions of "Daredevil" and "AVP" far outpace the impossible-to-follow theatrical cuts), the additional 17 minutes tacked onto the UNRATED DVD people version of "The 40-Year-Old Virgin" really undermine the film. Since "brevity is the soul of wit," comedies are at their best when they are around 90 minutes. At more than two hours, this people overlong version re-inserts ad-libbing that is unfunny and crass and includes additional material that undermines Andy's likeability. Also, almost all of the new material excludes Catherine Keener, to the point where she goes from being a major player into the theatrical version to a side-note in the extended version. Unfortunately, there seems to be no widescreen version of the theatrical cut! If only this DVD came with both versions... Still, the original film is AWESOME - 4 stars. |
