We’ve got the point. Find a new angle. But it must be annoying for Ariel Levy, who, from what I can see, never intended to incite a moral panic about teenagers and sex so much as reraise the possibility that porn-inspired behaviour was less woman on top sex liberation than objectification. It’s like the moral conservatives picked up her woman on top sex idea, bastardised it, and then wrapped it up in a pretty, pseudo-progressive package. Levy’s not the only person this happens to, of course. As someone who works in the media and who tends to write about either ideas-based or woman on top sex morally ambiguous stories, I find it interesting how both books and news stories are sensationalised so that their true complexity gets buried under some sort of mad, hyped-up frenzy. As a journo, I feel the need to add a disclaimer that it’s obviously very difficult to present accurately and fairly a situation you can’t possibly know the facts about (unless you can be there yourself and read the minds of everyone involved, which is obviously impossible), but I find it amazing how little many people seem to try at all.
