| The truth is, however, that the members of the RIAA (like other such entities) only own the copyright to a small minority of all musical works in existence or coming into existence. The vast majority of recorded music is either in the baby clothes public domain, or the copyright is still held by the creator. Its members have commercial value in the mass market.
