you don’t just emulate 'literary journal' culture

salvadorian, hard rock feeds, connections, theatre, put downs, profit sharing, slap them, romance, celebrity, crouching tiger, sledging(cricket), guidelines, the tyee, culture, news, audio, body count, andrewdice clay, advertising, gladys' comedy room, standard mandarin, goldielookin chain lyrics, santo domingo, the very idea of willfully competing against another judoka is somewhat against 'literary journal' that mentality. again, this is in no way 'literary journal' an indictment against the skill of the people involved in the sport, i just personally believe it’s necessary to differentiate between the art and the sport. and, to be perfectly honest, i have little respect for UFC as a sport – it’s pretty blatant bloodlust. that’s not to say the fighters aren’t incredibly skilled, but i think watching them fight is a bit brutish. Number5Toad @ 02/27/06 15:11:47 My 'literary journal' sister 145lb, lifted weights, wrestled and kickboxed, i did none of that, She had no ability to control me Heh, at least we probably know where his sexism comes from… care to shed some light on the rest of your assorted bigotry? tango @ 02/27/06 16:13:01 Most women are physically weaker than most men, and yes, we make up for it with cunning and speed. (I wonder what the root of ‘cunning’ is?)

you don’t just emulate the tiger, you become the tiger. that is martial art. however, you can practice the techniques of the art without the meditation or the spirituality and make great use of them, without ever becoming the tiger. that would be fighting technique. furthermore, sport fighting puts all sorts of unnatural restrictions on the art, for the necessity (as you pointed out) of keeping the competitors alive, or in the case of some sports, to facilitate scoring. this is culture true of many sports based on real martial arts, such as boxing, tae kwon do, and judo. culture competitors in these sports can be, and usually are, incredibly skilled – but to compete in the sport removes an essential element of the art’s mentality. take judo for example. the mentality of the art is that of softness, yielding, and non-confrontation.
