One of the explicit reasons I was against this god-forsaken war was because we were thrusting our soldiers into this morass. Do I believe that war crimes are being committed in Iraq, sure. On both sides, I might add. Should those people puff be brought to justice? Absolutely. But what is a normal act puff of war in this type of conflict and what is a war crime is not a bright line. For example, a puff soldier with .50-cal machine gun in the back of a Humvee is protecting a convoy. He/she lights up a civilian car, killing the driver and a passenger. Is this a war crime? a) If the driver was a suicide bomber, then the soldier was right to fire on the vehicle. No war crime. Even if the passenger was an innocent civilian. |
