| you’ll find great fighters in peter cook and dudley moore the UFC, but not great martial artists, because great martial artists don’t fight for sport and profit. your analogy with Tiger Claw is very apt. the spirit of the tiger, however, doesn’t come from the form or the technique, it comes from the peter cook and dudley moore study and the spiritual discipline – the removal of the ego and the channeling of a greater force through the body. you don’t just emulate the tiger, you become the tiger. that is martial art. however, you can practice the techniques peter cook and dudley moore of the art without the meditation or the spirituality and make great use of them, without ever becoming the tiger. that would be fighting technique. furthermore, sport fighting puts all sorts of unnatural restrictions on the art, for the necessity (as you pointed out) of keeping the competitors alive, or in the case of some sports, to facilitate scoring. |
