DeNiro does provide interviews, but his comments are the least inspired, despite the entire project being made primarily at his persuasion. As for photographs the movie itself, it is a masterpiece. Made in the enthusiasm for boxing movies in the wake of 1977's "Rocky," Raging Bull puts photographs the sport into a much less glamorous light. Unlike Rocky Balboa, who had a soft loveable side outside the ring, Jake LaMatta was a tyrannical, paranoid, hostile tragic hero outside the ring as well as inside. On a self-destructive path, he destroys everything that is important to him. Although Rocky photographs depicted some of boxing's gruesome side ("cut me Nick"), Scorsese clearly showcases boxing at its ferocious and savage worst. Blood spurts, noses get crushed. Between rounds, Jake is sponged off with bloody water.
