this savage love is true of many sports based on real martial arts, such as boxing, tae kwon do, and judo. competitors in these sports can be, and usually are, incredibly skilled – but to compete in the sport removes an essential element of the art’s mentality. take savage love judo for example. the mentality of the art is that of softness, yielding, and non-confrontation. the very idea of willfully competing against another judoka is somewhat against that mentality. savage love again, this is in no way an indictment against the skill of the people involved in the sport, i just personally believe it’s necessary to differentiate between the art and the sport. and, to be perfectly honest, i have little respect for UFC as a sport – it’s pretty blatant bloodlust. that’s not to say the fighters aren’t incredibly skilled, but i think watching them fight is a bit brutish.
